Familiar Place
The sounds of conversation echo off the walls, colliding with the wind of blow dryers, the buzz of hair clippers, the ringing of the phone, and the chiming of the front door bell. Beyond all the noise, from the drop ceiling above, speakers disperse the faint sounds of the billboard top 40 hits of the 70's, 80's, 90's and the present. Directly in front of me, approximately three feet off the ground and mounted on a white wall, is my work station; three feet long, two feet deep, and one and a half feet tall. The top of the station is dressed with a faux pine patterned formica counter top. The rest of the rectangular box shaped unit is composed of a white plastic composite material. In the front of the unit, two drawers lay on top of the other, measuring approximately 3"x2"x1.5". The top drawer is empty. The bottom drawer contains five pairs of sheers, two measuring at five inches, and three measuring at seven inches. Two of the seven inched pair are texturizing sheers. Each have one blade that has notched teeth. Next to the sheers are five brushes, a few hockey puck shaped canisters of men's grooming products, a bottle of gel, a bottle of hairspray, and a container of styling moose. On top of the counter is a clean black towel, a green container of Clubman Talc, a jar of combs submerged in a blue sanitizing liquid called barbicide, ten clipper blades, six clipper attachments, a neck brush, a hand mirror, an aerosol can of clippercide, and a small bottle of clipper oil. Mounted on the right side of the station are three chrome tubes. Two of the tubes are empty, while the one closest to the front of the work station contains a blow dryer. The nozzle rests in the tube, leaving the red handle exposed for viewing. Below the tubes are four hooks, mounted on the side of the station. Dangling from the first two hooks are a pair of Andis Master Clippers and pair of Andis T-Outliners. The next two hooks hang alone. Above the station hangs a three foot by four foot mirror. Reflected in the mirror is a you. You are sitting in a black barber chair, holding a book that showcases a variety of hairstyles. Behind the you stands a stunning man, with a red beard and bald head. Are you ready for the hair care experience of a life time?
