Today I decided to say, “F**k it… I give up.”
We have all been there. You are slowly dipping your toes into the frigid water. You must have dipped that big toe into the water fifty times already. What are you waiting for? Jump! Why didn’t you trim your toenails before today? Are you prepared for this? You are getting sunburnt; I hope you realize it. Just do it already. Stop being a coward.
A little over a year ago I decided to stop procrastinating and take the plunge, however I didn’t anticipate the heights that I would be diving from. So now I find myself here, where I started, alone with my thoughts and my laptop. Writing has been the one thing in academics that I have been able to “bullscript” my way through. I don’t know if I am a good writer or if I just really enjoy writing, but I can say that my writing skills have helped me breeze through some of the college courses that may be considered a little more abstract, like Psychology and Sociology. My gift for gab has allowed me to write some pretty “off the wall” pieces that have earned the interests of some of my professors. I can only imagine that professors get bored with reading the same thing, over and over again. My imagination has been my life raft over the past year.
I am currently taking a Probability and Statistics course and an Anatomy and Physiology course. I feel like I am standing at the top of the world’s highest building. This wasn’t the plunge that I had in mind. The course load is a little overwhelming. How am I supposed to memorize all of the material? Is the “growth mindset” going to propel me into the next semester with two more A’s? To be honest, I don’t know and I simply don’t care. All I can do is try.
The first week of Anatomy and Physiology got me off to a good start. This brings my mind to what I learned last week. The dorsal cavity houses the spine and the cranium. The ventral cavity houses the visceral organs. So basically in the ventral cavity you have the pericardial cavity (which houses the heart), the pleural cavity (lungs), abdominal cavity (intestines, stomach, spleen, liver, kidneys), pelvic cavity (internal reproductive organs, bladder, etc…), abdominopelvic cavity (which is the sum of the abdominal and pelvic cavities.) The ventral cavity is broken down into nine regions: the right and left flank regions, the right and left hypochondria regions, the right and left inguinal regions, the epigastric region, umbilical region and the pubic region.
Week two has been a plethora of information that I haven’t even been able to process. We went from atomic and molecular structure, which touches on neutrons, electrons and protons (atomic weight = neutrons + electrons, by the way) to atomic bonds, covalent bonds, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, DNA, RNA, triglycerides… I’m gonna be straight up and say that I have retained little to nothing of what I am supposed to be learning. I have been stressed out over all of this shit. In the meantime, my neighbor has been out of work for a while now and is foreclosing on his house. He has a daughter in third grade and a sixth grade son who has autism. I don’t think he anticipated plunging into all of that. He is way more relaxed than I. When I asked him how he maintains his cool, he responded with, “I gave up.”
“You gave up?” I asked.
“I gave up my worries,” he said, “I gave them up to God.”
F**k it, I can’t worry about this shit… I give up too.
