Would you like to know how I feel about math? It's not as much fun as writing... but, it's my current priority, which should explain why I haven't blogged a whole bunch.
-8 (2x+3) = 12 (3x-4)
Step One: Distribute
-16x -24 = 36x - 48
Step Two: Combine like terms
-52x = -24
52x = 24
x = 24/52
simplify
x = 12/26
simplify
x = 6/13
Blogging about mathematics is about as exciting as a snail race. Last week we reviewed chapter 2. I did the homework multiple times and took the practice test 13 times. I kept taking the test until I got 100% correct... and then I took the test 7 or 8 more times. I took my test last night and checked my answers by plugging in my calculated values with the assigned variables, in other words I reverse engineered the equations to verify the correct values of the variables. I happened to stumble upon errors and was able to reevaluate my answers while also seeing where I went wrong in my processes. I think I scored a 100, but we'll see. It is coming back to me. I kind of learned this shit over 20 years ago, though I seem to be paying much more attention now. I'm doing well. When I was 15, I had a fixed mindset and believed that I wasn't capable of doing math. At that time I was more concerned with checking out the females and copying their homework. I cheated in high school. I may have passed my math courses but I cheated myself out of the opportunity to gain some knowledge. Hey, I was a teenager. I thought I had it all figured out. I knew everything. Nobody could tell me shit. I am glad to no longer be a teenager.
On Monday night an 18-year-old girl came in to get her hair trimmed. While I was cutting her hair, her father walked back to my station and began to chat with her. She rolled her eyes.
"Am I embarrassing you, Sarah?" her father asked.
"Dad, could you please just leave?" Sarah replied.
Her father shook his head and left the building.
"I'm sorry that you had to see that," Sarah said, "I just can't stand him anymore. He thinks because we share the same genetics that I have to respect him, but I don't. He just isn't a good person."
"Don't worry," I said, "I was your age once and I thought I knew everything too."
Her face shifted to a perplexed stance. Her eyes squinted and brows raised.
I've been cutting Sarah's hair for the past 4 years, and to be honest, she's a fucking brat. While dealing with the public for the past 15 years, I've come to the conclusion that a lot of teenagers are assholes. I think it may come down to the age old conflict of struggle over power or maybe I just worked on the mainline for too many of those years, but what teenagers tend to fail to realize is that their parents take care of shit. From the 2-ply that you wipe your ass with to the roof that keeps your head dry, parents take care of shit. On top of working 40+ hours per week and dealing with economic responsibilities, parents have to put up with the irrational behaviors and shitty attitudes of disrespectful, entitled assholes while trying to ensure that these said assholes don't fuck the future up for themselves. After all, Sarah and her father's conflict stems from the fact that her father wants her to further her education at the university where he had graduated, West Chester University. She filled me in on all of this slightly before Christmas when I had asked her what her plans for college are. The money her father saved is enough to cover 4 years of tuition at West Chester University. Of coarse this stirred the shit stew when Sarah had informed her father that she wants to attend a school in NYC that costs roughly 4 times the tuition of West Chester... But hey, Sarah knows it all. Her father, who considered her education in advance and put away the money, is a selfish asshole... and Sarah, well... she just got a new hair style and "it's on fleek", though I doubt that Sarah realizes that her asshole father selfishly paid for her haircut.
ATTENTION KIDS: If Mommy and Daddy pay for your schooling and haircuts, you may want to reevaluate your adulthood status.
EXTRA CREDIT
If Sarah wants to go to school for 4 years at a cost of $24,000 per semester at the rate of two completed semesters per year, how much will the total cost of school be?
X = 4 (24,000 * 2)
Don't forget to simplify
X = 192,000
-8 (2x+3) = 12 (3x-4)
Step One: Distribute
-16x -24 = 36x - 48
